To reduce facial swelling, apply a cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes at a time during the first 48 hours, sleep with your head raised, and avoid heat, hard exercise, alcohol and salty food for a day or two. Swelling after fillers, lasers, Morpheus8 or dental work is part of normal healing: it usually peaks in the first two to three days and settles within one to two weeks, depending on the treatment and area. Lips and under-eyes swell the most. Swelling that keeps getting worse, comes with severe pain, skin color changes, fever or any trouble breathing is not normal and needs prompt care.
This guide explains how long swelling lasts after common treatments, what helps it go down faster, what to avoid, and the warning signs to act on.
How long does swelling last after each treatment?
| Treatment | Typical swelling | Usually settled by |
|---|---|---|
| Botox or Dysport | Small bumps at injection points | 15 to 30 minutes |
| Lip filler | Peaks at 24 to 48 hours; lips can look uneven | About 1 week; final result at 2 weeks |
| Under-eye filler | Mild puffiness for a few days | Up to 2 weeks |
| Cheek or jaw filler | Mild swelling and tenderness | A few days to a week |
| Kybella | Noticeable swelling under the chin | Several days per session |
| Morpheus8 | Sunburn-like redness and swelling | A few days |
| HALO laser | Swelling, often around the eyes on the first morning | A couple of days |
| Dental work or tooth removal | Cheek and jaw swelling | Eases after 1 to 2 days; can last up to 2 weeks |
How to reduce facial swelling fast
- Cold compressWrap ice or a cold pack in a soft cloth and hold it on the area for 10 to 15 minutes, a few times a day, for the first 48 hours. Never put ice directly on the skin, and avoid pressing hard on fresh filler.
- Head upSleep on an extra pillow for the first night or two so fluid does not collect in your face overnight.
- Skip heat and hard exerciseSaunas, hot tubs, hot yoga and intense workouts raise blood flow and can make swelling worse for the first 24 to 48 hours.
- Go easy on salt and alcoholBoth make your body hold on to water, which shows most in the face and around the eyes.
- Drink waterStaying hydrated helps your body clear fluid.
- Hands offDo not massage, rub or press treated areas unless your provider tells you to.
What about painkillers, arnica and antihistamines?
- Painkillers: acetaminophen (Tylenol) is the usual choice after injectables, because ibuprofen and aspirin can increase bruising. After dental work, follow your dentist’s advice.
- Arnica: some people use arnica gel or tablets for bruising and swelling. The evidence is mixed; it is generally safe to try, but ask your provider first.
- Antihistamines: help puffiness caused by allergies, but are not a treatment for normal swelling after a procedure.
Morning puffiness and everyday swelling
Waking up with a puffy face is common and usually harmless. Salty food, alcohol, poor sleep, allergies, crying and sleeping flat all play a part, and it settles as you move around. Cool water, a cold spoon or compress and a raised pillow help. Puffy under-eyes that never go away may be fat bags rather than fluid; see dark circles under the eyes. A face that is puffy for weeks, with weight gain or swelling elsewhere, is worth a check with your doctor.
Get help straight away if: skin near filler turns white, gray, blue or mottled, or pain is severe or getting worse (possible blocked blood vessel; call us immediately); you have any change in vision; swelling spreads with heat, redness, pus or fever (infection); or your lips, tongue or throat swell or you have trouble breathing or swallowing (call 911).
When swelling is not just swelling
Some changes look like swelling but are something else. Lumps that are still there after two weeks may be filler that needs massage or adjustment, and a puffy ridge above the lip can be filler migration.
