What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a long-term, immune-related condition in which the skin becomes covered with red, scaly plaques. Plaques usually have well-defined edges, often appear symmetrically, and can affect any part of the body; they may itch or crack. Psoriasis is not contagious and there is no cure yet, but treatment can clear the skin and keep flares under control. As plaques heal they can leave pale or brown marks that fade over time.

Why it happens

Causes of Psoriasis

An overactive immune system speeds up skin-cell growth so cells pile up as plaques. It tends to run in families, and flares can be triggered by stress, infections such as strep throat, skin injury, smoking and some medicines.

Types of Psoriasis and How We Treat Them

Psoriasis looks different depending on the type and where it appears. Choose a topic to learn more.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis happens when an overactive immune system speeds up skin-cell growth. Skin normally renews over about a month; in psoriasis it happens in days, so cells pile up as scaly plaques. Genetics and environmental triggers both play a role. There is no cure, but topical, injectable, light and systemic treatments can clear the skin and reduce flares. It can start at any age.

Plaque Psoriasis

The most common type (about 80–90% of people with psoriasis): raised, red plaques covered with silvery-white scale, most often on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back. Plaques can itch or hurt. Mild cases are usually treated with prescription topicals; thicker plaques may respond to intralesional injections.

Scalp Psoriasis

Red, raised, flaky patches on the scalp that can spread to the forehead, back of the neck and behind the ears. It is not contagious. Medicated shampoos, scale-softening products and prescription solutions or foams help.

Guttate Psoriasis

Many small, drop-shaped, scaly spots on the trunk, arms and legs, often appearing suddenly after a strep throat or other infection, most often in children and young adults. It often clears within weeks to a few months, but can return or turn into plaque psoriasis.

Inverse Psoriasis

Smooth, red, shiny patches (usually without scale) in skin folds such as the armpits, groin and under the breasts. Friction and sweat make it worse, and yeast or bacterial infection can complicate it. Gentle, low-strength treatments are used because skin in folds is thin.

Nail Psoriasis

Pitting, discoloration, thickening or lifting of the nails, on fingers or toes. It is common in people with psoriatic arthritis. Treatment can take months, because nails grow slowly.

Psoriatic Arthritis

Up to about 30% of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis, which causes joint pain, stiffness and swelling and can also affect the eyes. Tell us about any joint pain; early treatment by a rheumatologist helps prevent joint damage.

Pustular Psoriasis

White, pus-filled bumps (not infected) on red skin, often on the palms and soles. A widespread form with fever and feeling unwell is a medical emergency and needs urgent care.

Psoriasis on the Face

Psoriasis can affect the eyebrows, the skin between the nose and lips, the hairline and around the ears. Facial skin is delicate, so we use gentle treatments suited to the face.

Genital Psoriasis

Psoriasis in the genital area is common and often looks like smooth, red patches without scale, so it can be confused with infections. It is not contagious or sexually transmitted. Gentle prescription treatments work well; please mention it at your visit.

Erythrodermic Psoriasis

A rare, severe form in which redness and scaling cover most of the body, sometimes with chills, fever or fluid loss. It can be life-threatening and needs urgent medical care, often in hospital.

Psoriasis Treatment

Treatment depends on the type and how much skin is affected: prescription topicals (steroids, vitamin D creams), intralesional injections for stubborn plaques, UV light therapy and coal tar products for mild to moderate psoriasis, and for moderate to severe psoriasis, oral medicines or biologics. Glow Theory does not prescribe biologics, but our nurse practitioner has over a decade of experience with this class of medicines and can refer you to a trusted dermatologist when they are needed.

Glow theory has been amazing with helping me navigate the world of lasers. I was so lost but completed the consultation with Insiyah and loved it! She’s super informative and reviewed my daily routine with recommendations to improve. She completed a scan on my face to see damage and at what level. It was very enlightening and helped me be confident in my decision to proceed with laser and the right laser for my goals. I had my laser treatment with Lisa who was also a gem. She was very nice, comforting and explained everything. She made my treatment fun! Ashnah at the front desk has always been friendly, nice and goes above and beyond with her customer service. All of the staff I’ve engaged with has been top notch, kind and knowledgeable. I’d highly recommend and I’m excited to reach my goals with these gals in my corner. ❤️

Wonderful experience! The staff is great, didn’t upsell me on a million treatments, conservatively placed Botox & offered several discounts. My new favorite med spa!

Frequently Asked Questions

Insiyah Darugar MSN FNP, Glow Theory Founder, board-certifiedAnswered by Insiyah Darugar, MSN, FNP, founder and CEO

What causes psoriasis?

Psoriasis is caused by an overactive immune system that speeds up skin-cell growth. Genetics plays a part (it often runs in families), and flares can be triggered by stress, infections such as strep throat, skin injury, smoking, alcohol and some medicines.

Is psoriasis contagious?

No. Psoriasis cannot spread from person to person through touch, bodily fluids or any other contact.

What does psoriasis look like?

Most often raised, red plaques covered with silvery-white scale, usually on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back. Other types look different: small drop-like spots (guttate), smooth red patches in skin folds (inverse) or pus-filled bumps (pustular).

Is psoriasis curable?

There is no cure yet, but treatment can clear the skin for long periods. Options include prescription creams, intralesional injections, UV light therapy, coal tar products and, for moderate to severe psoriasis, oral medicines or biologics.

Is psoriasis an autoimmune disease?

Yes. Psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease: immune cells trigger inflammation that makes skin cells grow too fast. It is usually diagnosed by examining the skin; a biopsy is occasionally needed.

Does psoriasis itch?

Often, yes. Most people with psoriasis have some itching. Moisturizers, scale-softening products and treatment of the plaques help; avoid scratching, which can trigger new plaques.

Is psoriasis genetic?

Genetics plays an important role, and psoriasis often runs in families, but not everyone with a family history develops it. Environmental triggers are also needed. It most often starts between ages 15 and 35, though it can begin at any age.

What is the difference between eczema and psoriasis?

Both cause itchy, inflamed skin. Psoriasis usually forms thicker, well-defined plaques with silvery scale on the elbows, knees and scalp; eczema tends to be drier and itchier, with less defined patches, often in the creases of the elbows and knees. They are treated differently, so an accurate diagnosis matters. See eczema.

How much does psoriasis treatment cost?

Costs vary by treatment: topicals are budget-friendly, and biologics may cost more. Medical dermatology visits at Glow Theory are $150–$375.
