The science

How Intralesional Injections Work

An intralesional injection is a relatively simple outpatient procedure that delivers a corticosteroid directly into the lesion. This helps improve the lesion’s appearance and minimizes the symptoms of the lesion. Corticosteroids are naturally occurring chemicals that are often beneficial in treating certain skin conditions. Intralesional injections are also a relatively fast treatment option that requires minimal recovery time.

  • Minimally invasive
  • Takes under 5 minutes to complete

Safety and Side Effects

Intralesional injections are a well-established, safe treatment because the medicine stays in the treated spot rather than spreading through the body. Side effects are usually mild, such as brief stinging, redness or a small bruise. Repeated injections in the same place can occasionally cause skin thinning (a small dent), lighter skin or small visible blood vessels at the site, so we space treatments and use the lowest effective dose.

Glow theory has been amazing with helping me navigate the world of lasers. I was so lost but completed the consultation with Insiyah and loved it! She’s super informative and reviewed my daily routine with recommendations to improve. She completed a scan on my face to see damage and at what level. It was very enlightening and helped me be confident in my decision to proceed with laser and the right laser for my goals. I had my laser treatment with Lisa who was also a gem. She was very nice, comforting and explained everything. She made my treatment fun! Ashnah at the front desk has always been friendly, nice and goes above and beyond with her customer service. All of the staff I’ve engaged with has been top notch, kind and knowledgeable. I’d highly recommend and I’m excited to reach my goals with these gals in my corner. ❤️

Wonderful experience! The staff is great, didn’t upsell me on a million treatments, conservatively placed Botox & offered several discounts. My new favorite med spa!

Frequently Asked Questions

Insiyah Darugar MSN FNP, Glow Theory Founder, board-certifiedAnswered by Insiyah Darugar, MSN, FNP, founder and CEO

What is intralesional treatment?

Intralesional treatment means injecting medicine directly into a skin lesion. In dermatology this is usually a corticosteroid such as triamcinolone, used to calm inflammation and flatten thick tissue in keloids, raised scars, cystic acne, granuloma annulare and psoriasis plaques, without medicating the whole body.

Is an intralesional injection painful?

Most people feel a quick pinch and brief stinging. The injection takes under five minutes, and any soreness passes quickly. If you are worried about discomfort, let us know and we can numb the area first.

How does an intralesional steroid injection work?

The steroid suppresses local inflammation and slows the build-up of collagen, so thick, raised tissue softens and flattens. Inflamed cysts often settle within a few days; keloids and thick scars usually need a series of injections a few weeks apart. Steroid injections are also used for patchy hair loss (alopecia areata).

Are there side effects?

Side effects are usually mild: brief stinging, redness or a small bruise. Repeated injections in the same spot can occasionally cause skin thinning, lighter skin or small visible blood vessels, so we space treatments and use the lowest effective dose.

How much do intralesional injections cost?

Pricing varies by lesion type and the number of sessions. Medical dermatology visits at Glow Theory are $150–$375; contact us for a quote.
