A rash is inflammation of the skin, usually red, swollen or itchy patches. Common causes include allergic or irritant reactions to products, fragrance or chemicals, medicines, infections, heat (heat rash, from blocked sweat glands), autoimmune diseases and underlying skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. Many mild rashes settle within a few days; a rash that persists, spreads or covers much of the body should be examined.
Yes. Cold, dry air, long hot showers and harsh soaps or detergents strip the skin’s natural oils and can lead to an itchy, dry rash. Use lukewarm water, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and apply a moisturizer generously right after bathing. Colloidal oatmeal baths can soothe itchy skin. Very dry, itchy skin that does not improve should be checked, as it can occasionally be linked to other health conditions.
Yes. Stress hormones can trigger the release of histamine in the skin, causing hives (itchy welts) that often clear within hours, and stress can also make eczema, psoriasis and rosacea flare. Managing stress with exercise, time outdoors and mindfulness helps, and we can treat the rash itself.
Get urgent care or call 911 if a rash comes with fever, spreads quickly, blisters or peels, is very painful, or comes with swelling of the face, lips or tongue or trouble breathing.
