Most are harmless. Moles, skin tags, cysts and seborrheic keratoses are common benign growths. A mole that is new, changing, itching or bleeding should be checked to rule out skin cancer.
Use the ABCDE rule: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter over 6 mm and Evolving. If a mole shows any of these, or simply looks different from your other moles, book a check. See diagnosing melanoma.
The area is numbed with local anesthetic if needed. Expect slight redness or scabbing that heals in days to weeks; a small scar is possible.
