Dr. Jonathan Sykes

Dr. Jonathan Sykes, MD is the Medical Director of Glow Theory Aesthetic & Dermatology Studio in Carlsbad. A double board-certified facial plastic surgeon and Professor Emeritus of Otolaryngology at the UC Davis School of Medicine, he provides physician oversight for Glow Theory’s clinical team.

Academic leadership

Dr. Sykes was Director of Facial Plastic Surgery at the University of California, Davis Medical Center for more than 30 years. Over his career he has helped train more than 75 residents and 25 fellows in facial plastic surgery.

Surgical expertise

He has performed more than 20,000 surgical procedures and is an expert in rhinoplasty and age-related facial surgery, including facelift, brow lift and eyelid surgery. He has a special interest in facial feminization surgery (FFS) and has been invited to perform live demonstration surgeries in more than 15 countries.

Teaching injectables

Dr. Sykes has instructed many practitioners on facial anatomy and injection technique for neuromodulators such as Botox, and is an instructor for filling agents including Sculptra.

Research and publications

He is an editor of six textbooks and has written more than 200 scientific articles, book chapters and other papers in the medical literature. He has reviewed scientific papers for the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, Aesthetic Surgery Journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Laryngoscope, and has given more than 1,000 lectures locally, nationally and internationally.

National leadership

Dr. Sykes served on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) for ten years, as Western Region Vice President and Vice President of Education, and was elected President of the AAFPRS in 2010. He is a recipient of the AAFPRS William Wright Teaching Award.

Education and training

Dr. Sykes studied at the University of Pennsylvania, earned his medical degree at George Washington University, and completed residency training in head and neck and facial plastic surgery at Northwestern University in Chicago. He served for three years as a facial plastic surgeon in the United States Air Force at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, California.
