Why it flares

What Causes Eczema?

Atopic dermatitis typically flares up when triggered by one or more sources. Most commonly, our patients find their eczema is triggered by stress, excessive sweating, exposure to dust or pollen, the use of fragranced soaps or detergents, or excessive weight gain. Our medical professionals generally recommend that patients avoid these triggers as often as possible, in addition to keeping their skin moisturized, to prevent eczema flare-ups.

Types of Eczema and How We Treat Them

Eczema looks different depending on the type and where it appears. Choose a topic to learn more.

Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is the most common type of eczema. It often starts in childhood and causes dry, itchy, red patches; in infants it often appears on the cheeks and scalp. Daily moisturizing, avoiding triggers and treating flares with prescription creams keep it under control.

Eczema Symptoms

The main symptoms are itching, redness and dryness. Affected skin may thicken, crack, crust or even bleed, and scratching can lead to infection. Eczema is not contagious. On lighter skin patches look red; on darker skin they can look brown, purple or gray.

Eczema Treatment

Treatment combines a fragrance-free moisturizer or emollient applied at least twice a day (especially right after bathing) with medicines that calm inflammation during flares, such as topical corticosteroids or non-steroid creams. For more severe eczema, your provider may discuss pills, injectable biologics or a referral.

Dyshidrotic Eczema

Dyshidrotic eczema causes small, very itchy blisters on the palms, fingers and soles of the feet. Blisters usually heal within about three weeks, but flares can recur. Moisturizers and steroid ointments help, and we look at triggers such as sweating, stress and metals like nickel.

Nummular (Discoid) Eczema

Nummular eczema, also called discoid eczema, causes coin-shaped, itchy patches, most often on the legs, arms or torso. Patches may ooze and crust. It is treated with moisturizers and topical steroids; we may take a scraping to rule out a fungal infection such as ringworm.

Baby Eczema

Baby eczema usually appears as dry, red, scaly patches on the cheeks, scalp and limbs. Keep baths short and lukewarm, use fragrance-free cleansers, pat dry and apply a moisturizer right away (“soak and seal”). Ask your provider before trying special baths or creams; many children outgrow eczema.

Scalp & Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is the most common cause of a scaly, itchy scalp and can also affect the eyebrows, sides of the nose and behind the ears. It is linked to an inflammatory response to Malassezia yeast that lives on the skin, and is treated with medicated shampoos and creams.

Eczema on Hands

Hand eczema is often triggered by frequent washing, soaps and detergents. Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, moisturize after every wash, and wear cotton-lined gloves for wet work. Prescription creams treat flares.

Face, Eyelids & Lips

Facial skin is thin and sensitive, so eczema here is often triggered by fragrances, preservatives or metals in products. Eyelid and lip eczema need gentle treatment: only short courses of mild steroids or non-steroid creams, as prescribed, because long-term steroid use around the eyes can cause thinning and eye pressure problems.

Ear & Neck Eczema

Eczema on the ears and neck is often linked to nickel earrings, hair products, fragrances or rough clothing labels. Avoiding the trigger, using thick fragrance-free moisturizers and a short course of prescription cream usually helps. See us promptly if the area weeps or looks infected.

Breast Eczema

Eczema can affect the breast, nipple and the skin underneath, causing redness, dryness, scaling and itching. It usually responds well to moisturizers and gentle prescription creams. Because rarely a rash on the nipple can be a sign of another condition, any rash here that does not clear should be examined.

Stress-Related Eczema

Stress does not cause eczema on its own, but it is a common trigger for flares. Regular exercise, good sleep and techniques such as mindfulness can help, alongside your usual moisturizing routine and treatment plan.

Eczema Rash

An eczema rash can be triggered by irritants or allergens you touch (contact dermatitis), as well as pollen, dust, mold and pet dander. We diagnose it with an exam and your history, and sometimes patch testing; a biopsy is only needed if the diagnosis is unclear.

Glow theory has been amazing with helping me navigate the world of lasers. I was so lost but completed the consultation with Insiyah and loved it! She’s super informative and reviewed my daily routine with recommendations to improve. She completed a scan on my face to see damage and at what level. It was very enlightening and helped me be confident in my decision to proceed with laser and the right laser for my goals. I had my laser treatment with Lisa who was also a gem. She was very nice, comforting and explained everything. She made my treatment fun! Ashnah at the front desk has always been friendly, nice and goes above and beyond with her customer service. All of the staff I’ve engaged with has been top notch, kind and knowledgeable. I’d highly recommend and I’m excited to reach my goals with these gals in my corner. ❤️

Wonderful experience! The staff is great, didn’t upsell me on a million treatments, conservatively placed Botox & offered several discounts. My new favorite med spa!
