If you only read one thing
Textured skin is caused mainly by dead skin build-up, clogged pores, sun damage, dryness, acne and acne scars, and collagen loss with age. Surface roughness usually smooths within weeks with gentle chemical exfoliation a few times a week, a retinoid, moisturizer and daily sunscreen. Deeper texture such as scars and enlarged pores needs collagen-building treatments such as MOXI, HALO or Morpheus8 RF microneedling.
- Dead skin, clogged pores, sun damage, dryness and scars cause texture.
- Gentle chemical exfoliants suit most skin better than scrubs.
- A retinoid smooths texture over a couple of months.
- Moisturize after exfoliating and wear sunscreen daily.
- Over-exfoliating causes redness and more texture.
- MOXI, HALO and Morpheus8 treat deeper texture.
- Keratosis pilaris and milia need different care.

Textured skin is skin that looks or feels uneven: rough patches, tiny bumps, enlarged pores or shallow dips instead of a smooth surface. The most common causes are a build-up of dead skin cells, clogged pores, sun damage, dryness, acne and acne scars, and natural collagen loss with age. Gentle exfoliation, a retinoid, moisturizer and sunscreen smooth most surface roughness within weeks, while deeper texture such as scars and enlarged pores needs collagen-building treatments like MOXI, HALO or Morpheus8.
This guide explains what causes rough, bumpy skin, how to work out which kind you have, what to do at home and the in-office treatments that smooth texture.
What causes textured skin?
| Cause | What it looks or feels like | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Dead skin build-up | Dull, rough, uneven feel | Gentle chemical exfoliation, moisturizer |
| Clogged pores | Tiny flesh-colored bumps, blackheads | Salicylic acid, retinoids; see types of acne |
| Enlarged pores | Visible pores, often on the nose and cheeks | Retinoids, lasers, RF microneedling; see large pores |
| Sun damage and aging | Rough, crepey, uneven skin with fine lines | Retinoids, sunscreen, lasers |
| Acne scars | Dips, pits or rolling texture | Subcision, Morpheus8, lasers; see acne scars |
| Dryness or a damaged barrier | Tight, flaky, rough patches | Gentle cleanser, rich moisturizer, fewer actives |
| Keratosis pilaris | Rough “chicken skin” bumps on arms, thighs, sometimes cheeks | Urea or lactic acid lotions |
| Milia | Tiny hard white bumps, often around the eyes | Professional extraction |
How to smooth textured skin at home
- Exfoliate gently, not daily at first. A mild chemical exfoliant (lactic, glycolic, salicylic or mandelic acid) a few times a week suits most skin. Scrubs and brushes are often too harsh for dry, sensitive, acne-prone or darker skin.
- Add a retinoid. Adapalene or retinol at night speeds cell turnover and builds collagen. Start two or three nights a week. See our retinol guide.
- Moisturize straight after exfoliating or cleansing, to keep the barrier healthy.
- Wear sunscreen every day. Sun damage is a major cause of rough texture, and exfoliated skin burns more easily.
- Do not stack strong actives. Using an acid, a retinoid and benzoyl peroxide all at once often causes irritation and makes texture worse.
Over-exfoliated?
Stinging, tightness, redness, shiny skin or new breakouts can mean you are overdoing it. Stop acids and retinoids for a week or two, use only a gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen, then restart slowly. See our guide to repairing a damaged skin barrier.

Frequently asked questions
What causes textured skin on the face?
Most often dead skin build-up, clogged pores, sun damage, dryness, acne and acne scars, and collagen loss with age.
How do I get rid of textured skin fast?
A professional facial or peel gives quick smoothness; for lasting results, use a retinoid and gentle exfoliation, and consider lasers or RF microneedling for deeper texture.
Can over-exfoliating cause texture?
Yes. Too much scrubbing or acid damages the skin barrier, causing redness, tightness and bumps.
What are tiny bumps on my forehead?
Often clogged pores (closed comedones), sometimes fungal acne or milia. A retinoid or salicylic acid helps clogged pores.
What is the best laser for textured skin?
MOXI for gentle improvement with little downtime, HALO for more sun damage and pores, and Morpheus8 or HALO for acne scars.
How long does it take to smooth textured skin?
Surface roughness can improve in a few weeks; retinoids take a couple of months, and collagen treatments build over 3 to 6 months.
