SkinVive by Juvéderm is an injectable “skin booster” that improves skin quality rather than adding volume. Tiny droplets of hyaluronic acid are placed just under the skin of the cheeks, where they attract and hold water, so the skin looks smoother, more hydrated and dewier from within. It was FDA-approved in 2023 to improve cheek skin smoothness in adults 21 and older, and results last about six months. It is not a filler: it will not lift cheeks or fill lines, but it pairs well with treatments that do.
This guide explains how SkinVive works, who it suits, how it compares with filler and other skin treatments, what to expect and what it costs.
How SkinVive works
SkinVive is a smooth, lightly cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel with lidocaine for comfort. Instead of being placed deep as a filler would be, it is injected as many small microdroplets into the skin across the cheeks. Hyaluronic acid is a natural “moisture magnet” that holds water, so the skin looks plumper, smoother and more radiant without changing the shape of your face. In its FDA study of 209 people, the improvement in cheek smoothness lasted at least six months.
Who is SkinVive for?
- Good fitAdults 21+ with dull, dehydrated or slightly crepey cheek skin who want a natural glow without added volume.
- Good fitPeople happy with their face shape who want better skin quality, or who want to boost results from filler or lasers.
- Not the right toolFor lost cheek volume, deep folds or sagging; those need filler, Sculptra or skin tightening.
- Not suitableIf you have severe allergies with a history of anaphylaxis, an allergy to lidocaine or to gram-positive bacterial proteins, or an active skin infection in the area.
SkinVive vs filler vs other skin treatments
| Treatment | What it does | Lasts |
|---|---|---|
| SkinVive | Hydrates and smooths cheek skin; no volume | About 6 months |
| Cheek filler | Restores volume and lift | About 1 to 2 years, depending on product |
| Sculptra | Builds collagen for gradual volume | Up to about 2 years |
| Morpheus8 or MOXI | Improves texture, pores and firmness | Long-lasting with maintenance |
Because SkinVive works on hydration and the others work on structure or collagen, they are often combined. See facial volume loss and how to restore collagen.
What to expect
- Consultation: we check your skin and goals and confirm SkinVive is the right choice.
- Treatment: the cheeks are cleaned, and small injections are placed across each cheek. The injections take about 10 to 15 minutes; plan 30 to 45 minutes for the visit.
- After: small bumps, redness, swelling or bruising at the injection points usually settle within a few days. Avoid makeup, heavy exercise and pressure on the cheeks for the rest of the day.
- Results: skin looks smoother and more radiant as swelling settles, typically within a couple of weeks, and the effect lasts about six months. Touch-ups every 6 to 12 months keep it going.
SkinVive for neck lines
In June 2026, SkinVive was also FDA-approved to improve horizontal neck lines in adults over 21. In the pivotal study, about three quarters of treated people improved at one month, and about two thirds kept the improvement at six months. Providers must complete specific training before offering it, so ask us whether neck treatment is available yet.
Is SkinVive worth it?
If your main concern is dull, dry-looking skin on your cheeks, SkinVive gives a subtle, natural glow with very little downtime. If you want more lift or fewer wrinkles, filler, Botox or a skin-tightening treatment will make a bigger difference, and SkinVive can be added for skin quality.
