If you only read one thing
Botox for lines and wrinkles usually lasts about 3 to 4 months, which is what the FDA label states for frown lines. It starts working in 1 to 2 days, peaks at about 2 weeks and then gradually wears off. A lip flip lasts about 2 to 3 months, jaw (masseter) Botox about 4 to 6 months and underarm sweating treatment about 6 months. The right dose, consistent treatment, aftercare and sun protection help results last.

For most people, Botox for lines and wrinkles lasts about 3 to 4 months. That is what the FDA label states for frown lines, and it matches what most injectors see. Some areas wear off sooner, some last longer, and results gradually fade rather than stopping overnight. Here is how long Botox lasts in each area, what affects it, the signs it is wearing off and what you can do to make it last.
The life of a Botox treatment
A typical Botox cycle
- Starting to work
- Full result
- Wearing off
Botox starts to relax the treated muscles within one to two days, builds over the first week and reaches its full effect at about two weeks. In the FDA trials for frown lines, 80% of people had a clear improvement at one month, 48% at three months and 25% still at four months, which is why “3 to 4 months” is the usual answer. Our day-by-day guide to how long Botox takes to work covers the first two weeks.
How long Botox lasts by area
| Area | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Frown lines (11s) | 3 to 4 months |
| Forehead lines | 3 to 4 months |
| Crow’s feet | 3 to 4 months |
| Lip flip | About 2 to 3 months (small dose, constant movement) |
| Jaw slimming and teeth grinding (masseter) | About 4 to 6 months, often longer with repeat treatment |
| Underarm sweating | About 6 months (median 201 days in the FDA trial) |
What affects how long Botox lasts
- Dose: too few units wears off sooner. Very light “baby Botox” looks natural but may need topping up more often.
- Muscle strength: strong, very active muscles, common in men and expressive faces, break through faster.
- The area: small doses in mobile areas such as the lips fade fastest; larger muscles such as the masseter last longer.
- Your metabolism: very active people and endurance athletes often report shorter results, although the evidence is mixed.
- How regularly you treat: many people find results last a little longer after a few consistent treatments, as the muscles become less active.
- Product and technique: correct placement and dose matter more than the brand; Dysport, Xeomin and Daxxify have similar or, for Daxxify, sometimes longer durations.
Signs your Botox is wearing off
- You can move your brows or frown a little more than before.
- Fine lines start to show again when you make expressions.
- Lines at rest are still softer than before your first treatment.
Botox wears off gradually and evenly, and your face returns to how it was before, not worse. If you stop altogether, your lines simply return over a few months, often still a little softer than if you had never been treated, because the muscles have been resting.
How to make Botox last longer
- Get the right dose for your muscles, rather than the fewest units possible. See how many units you need.
- Treat consistently, about every 3 to 4 months at first; many people can then space visits out.
- Follow aftercare: stay upright and avoid rubbing or pressing the area and strenuous exercise for the rest of the day. See our Botox aftercare guide.
- Protect your skin: daily sunscreen and a retinoid slow collagen loss, so lines look softer even as Botox wears off.
- Combine treatments: for lines that are visible at rest, a little filler or a skin treatment lasts longer than Botox alone; see Juvéderm vs Botox.
Avoid having Botox more often than every 3 months. The FDA label notes that more frequent dosing has not been studied, and very frequent, high doses may raise the small risk of developing antibodies that make Botox less effective.
Cost and keeping up with treatment
Because most people have Botox 3 to 4 times a year, the yearly cost matters more than one visit. At Glow Theory Botox is $14 per unit, or $11.90 for VIP members, and a full upper face of about 60 units is around $840. See our Botox price guide for every area.
