How Long Does Botox Take to Work? A Day-by-Day Timeline
How long Botox takes to work, day by day: when it starts, when you notice it, when it peaks at about two weeks, what affects the speed, what to do in the first days and when to call your injector.
How we write and check our articles

If you only read one thing
Botox starts to relax the treated muscles 1 to 2 days after injection, according to the FDA label. Most people notice a difference in 3 to 7 days, and the full result appears at about 2 weeks. Deep, etched lines and larger muscles such as the jaw take longer. Wait the full two weeks before judging, and book at least two weeks before an event.

Botox does not work instantly. The FDA label explains that it starts to relax the treated muscles one to two days after injection, with the effect increasing over the first week. Most people notice a difference in 3 to 7 days and see their full result at about 2 weeks. Knowing the timeline helps you plan treatment before an event and avoid worrying in the first few days when nothing seems to have happened.

| When | What you will notice |
|---|---|
| Day 0 | Small bumps at the injection points that flatten within about an hour; possibly a tiny bruise. No change in lines yet. |
| Days 1 to 2 | Botox begins to block the nerve signals. Most people still see little difference. |
| Days 3 to 5 | Movement starts to soften; frowning or raising your brows feels weaker. |
| Days 5 to 7 | A clear difference for most people; in the FDA trials, 74% of people had a clear improvement in frown lines by day 7. |
| Days 10 to 14 | The full result. This is the time to judge whether the dose and balance are right. |
Why Botox takes time
Botox works by blocking the release of a chemical messenger (acetylcholine) at the point where nerves tell muscles to contract. It has to be taken up by the nerve endings and switch off that signal, and the muscle then has to relax. That process happens gradually over days, which is why the effect builds rather than appearing at once. Lines that are already etched into the skin can take a little longer to soften, because the skin needs time to smooth out once the muscle stops creasing it.
What affects how quickly Botox works
- The product: Dysport often starts a little sooner, in about 2 to 3 days; see Dysport vs Botox.
- The area and muscle size: small muscles around the eyes and forehead respond quickly; larger muscles such as the masseter take longer, and jaw slimming takes weeks to show because the muscle shrinks gradually.
- The dose: very low doses may take longer to show and look subtler.
- Depth of lines: deep, static lines soften more slowly and may need filler as well.
- Individual response: everyone’s nerves and muscles respond at a slightly different pace.
What to do in the first few days
- Stay upright for about four hours and avoid rubbing, massaging or pressing the treated areas.
- Skip strenuous exercise, saunas and hot yoga for the rest of the day.
- Gently use the treated muscles (frowning and raising your brows) if your injector suggests it.
- Avoid facials, face massage and other facial treatments for a few days.

What if Botox does not seem to be working?
Wait the full two weeks before judging. If at 14 days you see little change, one side is stronger than the other, or one brow sits higher, contact your injector. A small top-up or adjustment usually fixes it. Do not have more Botox elsewhere before then, because adding more too early makes it hard to know what you need and raises the risk of a heavy or uneven look. A true lack of response is rare; the most common reasons are a dose too low for strong muscles, or expecting Botox to erase deep lines that need filler.
When to call sooner
Contact your injector straight away for drooping of the eyelid, double vision, trouble swallowing or speaking, or any breathing difficulty. These are rare, but need prompt advice.
How long the result lasts
Once it peaks at about two weeks, Botox usually holds for about 3 to 4 months before wearing off gradually. See how long Botox lasts by area and how to make results last longer.

Why can't I see a difference 3 days after Botox?
That is normal. Botox builds gradually over the first week, with the full result at about 2 weeks.

Contact your injector. A small top-up or adjustment usually fixes a weak or uneven result.
How far before an event should I get Botox?
