20 Units Of Botox

In a hurry? Skim mode fades everything except the highlighted takeaways.

If you only read one thing

Most people need 12 to 30 units of Botox for the forehead, 15 to 30 for frown lines and 16 to 30 for crow's feet. The FDA-approved doses are 20 units for frown lines, 24 for crow's feet and 40 for the forehead plus frown lines. Twenty units is a standard amount for one area. At Glow Theory, 20 units costs $280.

  • A unit measures the strength of Botox, not the amount of liquid, and units are not the same between brands.
  • Typical ranges: forehead 12 to 30 units, frown lines 15 to 30, crow's feet 16 to 30, lip flip 4 to 8, jaw slimming 30 to 50.
  • Twenty units is the FDA-approved dose for frown lines and a standard amount for one area; a full upper face is about 64 units.
  • Strong muscles, deeper lines and men usually need more units; fine lines and a natural look need fewer.
  • Botox at Glow Theory is $14 per unit, or $11.90 for VIP members.

“How many units do I need?” is the first question almost everyone asks about Botox, and it decides both your result and your bill. The honest answer depends on the area, the strength of your muscles and how much movement you want to keep. But there are reliable starting points, and the FDA-approved doses give a useful anchor.

This guide gives typical units for every common area, explains what 20 units of Botox actually covers, what changes the number for you, and what each amount costs at our Carlsbad studio.

What is a unit of Botox?

A unit is a measure of strength, not of liquid. Botox arrives as a powder that is mixed with saline before treatment, so the same number of units can be given in slightly different amounts of liquid. What matters for your result is the number of units placed in each muscle.

Units are specific to each brand. A unit of Dysport, Xeomin or Jeuveau is not the same strength as a unit of Botox, so the numbers in this guide apply to Botox only. For Dysport you need roughly two and a half to three times as many units; our Dysport vs Botox guide explains the conversion.

Typical Botox units by area

These are the ranges we plan for at Glow Theory, with typical totals at our current price of $14 per unit. Your own number is set at your consultation, and you know it before we begin.

Units are for the whole area (both sides where there are two). VIP members pay $11.90 per unit.

For comparison, the FDA-approved doses from the Botox Cosmetic prescribing information are 20 units for frown lines, 24 units for crow’s feet (12 on each side), 20 units for forehead lines given together with 20 for frown lines, and 26 to 36 units for neck bands. Other areas in the table are treated “off-label”, which is common and safe in experienced hands; it simply means the manufacturer has not run formal trials for that area.

What does 20 units of Botox do?

Twenty units is a very common amount, and it is the FDA-approved dose for frown lines, the vertical “11s” between your brows. That is the single area where 20 units is the standard.

Beyond the frown lines, 20 units can also cover:

  • Crow’s feet in many people, or a light treatment if your lines are fine
  • A light forehead treatment, especially if you want to keep plenty of movement
  • A few small areas together, such as a lip flip, bunny lines and a dimpled chin
  • “Baby Botox”: small doses spread across the upper face for a soft, preventive result

What 20 units usually will not do is treat the forehead, frown lines and crow’s feet all at once at full strength. Spread that thin, each area gets too little to last, and lines return within weeks rather than months.

Is 20 units of Botox a lot?

No. It is a moderate, standard amount for one area. For context, a full upper-face treatment at the FDA-approved doses is 64 units, and a jaw-slimming treatment often uses 30 to 50 units on its own. Twenty units is a sensible first treatment for frown lines, and a common “maintenance” amount once you know how your face responds.

What changes how many units you need

  • Strong muscles or deep linesNeed more units. Men usually need more than women for the same area.
  • Fine lines and lighter movementFewer units, sometimes as baby Botox.
  • You want to keep plenty of expressionFewer units, placed carefully, for a softer result.
  • You want lines as smooth as possibleMore units within the safe range for that area.
  • Your result wore off quickly last timeOften a sign the dose was too low for your muscles.
  • Your brows are low or heavyThe forehead needs a lighter touch so your brows do not drop.

How many units for your first time?

First-time patients usually need about the same number of units as anyone else for the same area, but we tend to start conservatively, especially on the forehead. A common first treatment is around 20 units for frown lines, or around 40 units for the forehead and frown lines together.

Botox starts to work in 3 to 7 days and reaches its full effect at about two weeks, which is when we see you again. If a line is still moving more than you would like, we add a few units then. After one or two visits we know your face, and your future treatments are planned to the unit.

How long do the units last?

Most people enjoy their result for 3 to 4 months. Too few units for the muscle is the most common reason Botox wears off early, which is why a cheap, under-dosed treatment rarely saves money. Our guide to how long Botox lasts covers this in more detail, and our Botox aftercare guide explains what to do (and avoid) on the day.

How we plan your units at Glow Theory

We watch your face as you frown, raise your brows and smile, feel the strength of each muscle, and ask what you want to keep: some movement, a lifted brow, a soft forehead. Then we tell you how many units go where, and what it will cost, before we begin. You can see every area and price on our Botox in Carlsbad page, or read about the most popular areas for Botox.
