If you only read one thing
Forehead wrinkles are horizontal lines caused by the forehead muscle lifting the brows, deepened by sun damage and collagen loss with age. Lines that appear only when you move (dynamic) respond best to Botox, which is FDA-approved for forehead lines and lasts about 3 to 4 months. Lines visible at rest (static) need Botox plus a skin treatment such as laser resurfacing, Morpheus8 or Sofwave. Daily sunscreen and a retinoid help prevent and soften lines.
- Forehead lines come from the frontalis muscle raising the brows, plus sun and aging.
- Dynamic lines appear with movement; static lines remain at rest.
- Botox is FDA-approved for forehead lines and was approved at 20 units; doses usually range from 12 to 30 units.
- Forehead Botox is usually combined with frown lines to keep the brows from dropping.
- Static lines also need resurfacing, Morpheus8, Sofwave or peels.
- Daily SPF 30+ and a retinoid help prevent new lines.

Forehead wrinkles are the horizontal lines that run across your forehead. They form because the forehead muscle (the frontalis) lifts your eyebrows every time you look surprised, raise your brows to see better or express yourself, and over the years those folds stay behind even when your face is relaxed. Sun damage and age-related loss of collagen deepen them.
The good news is that forehead lines respond well to treatment. This guide explains what causes them, how to tell which kind you have, and the treatments that smooth them, from Botox to resurfacing and good skincare.
What causes forehead wrinkles?
- Muscle movement: raising your brows folds the skin into horizontal lines. People who raise their brows a lot, including many with heavy or hooded upper eyelids, tend to develop them earlier.
- Sun damage: UV light breaks down collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm and springy.
- Age: skin gets thinner and less elastic, so creases no longer bounce back.
- Genetics and skin type: some people simply crease more easily.
- Smoking and dehydration: both make lines look deeper.
Vertical lines between the eyebrows are a different set, called frown lines or “11s,” caused by different muscles. They are often treated at the same time.

Treatments for forehead wrinkles
Botox and other neuromodulators
Botox relaxes the forehead muscle so it stops creasing the skin. Botox Cosmetic was FDA-approved for forehead lines in 2017 at a dose of 20 units, given together with the frown lines, because treating the forehead alone can let the brows sit lower. In practice the forehead dose is tailored, and usually falls between 12 and 30 units. Results start in a few days, peak at about two weeks and last about 3 to 4 months. A light, well-placed dose keeps some natural movement. See how long Botox takes to work and how long it lasts.
Forehead Botox needs care if you have heavy or hooded eyelids, because you may be using your forehead muscle to hold your brows up. Too much can make the brows feel heavy. A skilled injector adjusts the dose and placement, and may treat the outer brow to give a gentle lift; read about the Botox brow lift and how injectors avoid a “Spock brow”.
Skin resurfacing and collagen treatments
- HALO and erbium laser resurfacing smooth etched lines and sun damage.
- Morpheus8 RF microneedling builds collagen to soften static lines.
- Sofwave ultrasound can treat the forehead and eyelid area to firm skin and give a subtle brow lift.
- Chemical peels improve fine lines and texture over a series.
Filler
Filler is sometimes used in small amounts for deep, etched forehead lines that remain after Botox, or to restore volume in a hollow forehead. The forehead has important blood vessels, so this is an advanced technique and not a first-line treatment.
Skincare
- Daily sunscreen: SPF 30+ every day slows new lines from forming.
- A retinoid: builds collagen and softens fine lines over months; see our retinol guide.
- Vitamin C and moisturizer: protect and plump the skin; see vitamin C for skin.
Wrinkle patches, facial exercises and “Botox in a bottle” creams may make skin look temporarily smoother but do not relax the muscle.

Frequently asked questions
What causes forehead wrinkles?
Repeatedly raising your eyebrows with the forehead muscle, combined with sun damage, collagen loss with age, genetics and smoking.
What is the best treatment for forehead wrinkles?
Botox for lines that appear with movement, plus resurfacing, RF microneedling or Sofwave for lines that remain at rest.
How many units of Botox for forehead lines?
Typically 12 to 30 units, often given together with the frown lines.
Can Botox make my eyebrows droop?
It can if too much is placed in the forehead, especially with hooded eyelids. A skilled injector adjusts the dose and placement to avoid it.
Can you get rid of deep forehead wrinkles?
They can be softened a lot with Botox plus resurfacing or collagen treatments, though deep etched lines may not disappear completely.
Do forehead wrinkle creams work?
Retinoids, sunscreen and moisturizers help fine lines, but no cream relaxes the muscle like Botox.
