Chemical Peels for Dark Spots and Acne Scars: Light, Medium or Deep?
Light, medium and deep chemical peels explained: which acids fade dark spots, melasma and post-acne marks, what peels can do for acne scars, safety for darker skin, and peel prices in Carlsbad.
How we write and check our articles

If you only read one thing
For dark spots, a series of light chemical peels (glycolic, salicylic, lactic or low-strength TCA) or a depigmentation peel such as Cosmelan MD works best, with daily sunscreen. Medium TCA peels treat deeper sun damage and shallow acne scars with 7 to 14 days of peeling. Deep phenol peels are a surgical procedure. Melasma and darker skin tones do best with gentle peels, because strong peels can cause dark patches.
- Peels come in light, medium and deep depths.
- Light peels heal in 1 to 7 days and usually need 3 to 5 sessions.
- Medium TCA peels heal in 7 to 14 days.
- Glycolic and TCA peels fade sun spots; salicylic suits acne marks.
- Melasma needs gentle or depigmentation peels, not strong ones.
- Peels improve shallow acne scars; deep scars need subcision, RF microneedling or laser.
- Darker skin can be peeled safely with the right peel and an experienced provider.

A chemical peel can fade dark spots and soften shallow acne scars by removing damaged surface skin so fresher, more even skin grows back. Peels come in three depths, light, medium and deep, and the right one depends on what you want to treat, your skin tone and how much downtime you can take. For most dark spots, a series of light peels or a targeted depigmentation peel works better and more safely than one strong peel.
This guide explains the three peel depths, the acids used (glycolic, salicylic, lactic and TCA), which peel suits sun spots, melasma, post-acne marks and acne scars, and what each costs at our Carlsbad studio.
Light, medium or deep: the three peel depths
| Depth | Typical acids | Healing time |
|---|---|---|
| Light (superficial) | Glycolic, lactic, salicylic, mandelic, low-strength TCA | 1 to 7 days of redness and light flaking |
| Medium | Higher-strength TCA, often combined with other acids | 7 to 14 days of swelling, crusting and peeling |
| Deep | Phenol | 14 to 21 days, done under anesthesia in a surgical setting |
Light peels work on the top layer of skin and can be repeated every few weeks. Medium peels reach the upper dermis and treat deeper sun damage and some scarring in fewer sessions, with about a week of visible peeling. Deep peels are a surgical procedure with months of sun avoidance, and they are not among the peels we offer.
Which acid does what?
- Glycolic acidThe smallest alpha-hydroxy acid. Speeds cell turnover and fades sun spots and dullness; also helps fine lines.
- Salicylic acidAn oil-soluble beta-hydroxy acid that clears pores. Best for acne-prone skin and post-acne marks.
- Lactic and mandelic acidGentler alpha-hydroxy acids, good for sensitive skin and for starting slowly on darker skin tones.
- TCA (trichloroacetic acid)Strength sets depth. Low strengths give a light peel; higher strengths a medium peel for sun damage and shallow acne scars.
- Depigmenting agentsKojic acid, azelaic acid and arbutin slow melanin production. Used in peels made for melasma and stubborn pigment.
The best peel for dark spots
Dark spots come in different types, and each responds differently. Our hyperpigmentation guide explains them in more detail.
- Sun spots and age spots: a series of light glycolic or TCA peels fades them well. Single, well-defined spots often clear faster with a light treatment such as BBL HERO; see age spot removal.
- Melasma: it is hormonal and sun-triggered, and strong peels can make it worse. Gentle peels and a depigmentation peel such as Cosmelan MD, with daily sunscreen, work best. Read about melasma treatment and HALO for melasma.
- Post-acne marks (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation): salicylic and glycolic peels clear acne and fade the brown or red marks it leaves.
Can a chemical peel fix acne scars?
Peels improve shallow scars, rough texture and the marks acne leaves behind. A medium-strength TCA peel builds some collagen and softens shallow rolling scars. Deep ice-pick, boxcar and tethered scars need other treatments, such as subcision, Morpheus8 or laser resurfacing, often combined with peels. See how to get rid of acne scars and our guide to depressed acne scars.
Peels for darker skin tones
People with medium and darker skin can have chemical peels safely, but stronger peels carry a higher risk of dark patches, and occasionally light patches, as skin heals. The safest approach is a light peel or a depigmentation peel, started gently, with skin prepared beforehand and strict sun protection after. Your provider should have experience treating darker skin; see our guide to Fitzpatrick skin types.
Who should wait or avoid a peel
- Anyone with active cold sores, sunburn, broken skin or an active rash on the face.
- Anyone who has taken isotretinoin (Accutane) recently. Ask your provider how long to wait.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should ask first, because some peel ingredients are not advised.
- Anyone who gets cold sores should tell their provider; an antiviral can prevent a flare after a peel.
- Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids a few days before your peel, or as your provider advises.

A series of light glycolic or TCA peels for sun spots, salicylic peels for post-acne marks, and a gentle or depigmentation peel such as Cosmelan MD for melasma.
How many chemical peels do I need for dark spots?
Usually 3 to 5 light peels spaced 2 to 5 weeks apart, plus daily sunscreen to keep spots from returning.
What is a TCA peel?
A peel using trichloroacetic acid. Low strengths give a light peel; higher strengths give a medium peel for sun damage and shallow scars.
Can a chemical peel remove acne scars?
It can soften shallow scars and fade acne marks, but deep pitted scars need subcision, RF microneedling or laser resurfacing.
Are chemical peels safe for dark skin?
Yes, with the right peel. Light and depigmentation peels are safest; stronger peels raise the risk of dark patches, so choose an experienced provider.
