If you only read one thing
A lip flip uses 4 to 8 units of Botox to relax the muscle above the upper lip so it turns slightly outward; it adds no volume, looks very subtle and lasts about 2 to 3 months. Lip filler adds real volume and shape with hyaluronic acid, works immediately and lasts about 6 to 12 months, and can be dissolved. Choose a flip for a subtle, low-commitment change, filler for noticeably fuller lips, or combine them.

A lip flip and lip filler both make lips look fuller, but they work in completely different ways. A lip flip uses a few units of Botox to relax the muscle around the mouth so the upper lip rolls slightly outward, showing more of its pink part. Lip filler adds real volume with hyaluronic acid gel. One is subtle, quick and short-lived; the other is more noticeable and lasts much longer.
This guide compares the two side by side so you can choose the look you actually want, or decide to combine them.

How a lip flip works
The upper lip is surrounded by a ring-shaped muscle, the orbicularis oris, which puckers and pulls the lip inward when you smile or talk. Tiny doses of Botox placed just above the upper lip border relax the edge of that muscle, so the lip rests in a slightly turned-out position and shows more of its red part. It does not add volume. The treatment takes a few minutes, with almost no downtime. Using Botox in the lips is an off-label use, which is common and safe in experienced hands.
A lip flip suits people who:
- want a very natural, subtle change or are trying a lip treatment for the first time
- feel their upper lip “disappears” or thins when they smile
- have a slightly gummy smile, since the same idea can reduce how much gum shows; see Botox for a gummy smile
- already have reasonable lip volume and want a little more show
How lip filler works
Lip filler places soft hyaluronic acid gel, such as Juvéderm Volbella or Restylane Kysse, into the lips and along the border. It can add volume, balance the upper and lower lip, define the Cupid’s bow, smooth vertical lip lines and restore volume lost with age. Results are visible straight away, and because it is hyaluronic acid it can be dissolved if you ever want to reverse it. Lip filler suits people who:
- want noticeably fuller lips or more shape
- have thin lips or lips that have lost volume with age
- want to correct unevenness between the two sides or the two lips
- have lip lines that a lip flip will not fix
Side effects compared
| Lip flip | Lip filler |
|---|---|
| Small bumps and redness at injection points for an hour or so | Swelling for 2 to 3 days, settling within about 2 weeks |
| Temporary difficulty drinking through a straw, whistling or saying “p” and “b” sounds | Bruising and tenderness for several days |
| Rarely, an uneven smile or a little drooling for a few weeks | Lumps, migration or, rarely, a blocked blood vessel |
| Wears off on its own; cannot be dissolved | Can be dissolved with an enzyme |
Neither treatment is given during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Our lip filler side effects guide covers what is normal after filler and what is not.
Can you combine a lip flip and lip filler?
Yes, and it is common. Filler builds volume and definition, while the flip lets the upper lip show more when you smile, so you may need less filler overall. They can be done at the same visit or a couple of weeks apart. Your injector will plan the order and amounts.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a lip flip and lip filler?
A lip flip uses Botox to relax the lip muscle so the upper lip turns slightly outward without adding volume; lip filler adds volume and shape with hyaluronic acid.
How long does a lip flip last?
About 2 to 3 months, shorter than Botox elsewhere because the dose is small and the lips move constantly.
Is a lip flip or lip filler better for thin lips?
Filler, because thin lips need volume. A lip flip suits lips with reasonable volume that roll inward when smiling.
How much does a lip flip cost?
At Glow Theory a lip flip is $56 – $112 (4 to 8 units of Botox).
Can I get a lip flip and filler together?
Yes. Many people combine them in one visit or a couple of weeks apart.
What are the side effects of a lip flip?
Temporary difficulty using a straw, whistling or saying some sounds, and rarely a slightly uneven smile, all of which wear off.
