Botox for Hooded Eyes in Carlsbad

In a hurry? Skim mode fades everything except the highlighted takeaways.

If you only read one thing

A Botox brow lift can help mild hooded eyes. A few units under the tail of each brow relax the muscle that pulls the brow down, so the brow lifts by a few millimeters and the eye looks more open. It does not remove excess eyelid skin or fix a drooping eyelid muscle, and over-treating the forehead can make hooding worse. Results last about three to four months.

  • Hooded eyes can come from low brows, natural eye shape, excess eyelid skin or a drooping eyelid muscle.
  • A Botox brow lift relaxes the muscles that pull the outer brow down, lifting it a few millimeters.
  • It suits mild hooding; excess eyelid skin needs blepharoplasty and ptosis needs a doctor's assessment.
  • Too much forehead Botox can let the brows drop and make hooding worse.
  • Results start in 3 to 7 days, peak at 2 weeks and last about 3 to 4 months.
  • Risks include uneven or Spock brows, brow heaviness and, rarely, a temporary eyelid droop.

A “Botox brow lift” uses a few carefully placed units to raise the tail of the eyebrows slightly and make the eyes look more open. For mild hooding, it can make a lovely difference: a fresher, less tired look, with no surgery or downtime. But the lift is small, a few millimeters, and it cannot remove excess eyelid skin. Done in the wrong place, Botox can even make hooded eyes look heavier.

This guide gives you a realistic picture: what causes hooded eyes, how a Botox brow lift works, who it suits, how long it lasts, the risks and when eyelid surgery is the better answer.

What causes hooded eyes?

Hooded eyes are when a fold of skin from the brow area sits over the upper eyelid, partly hiding the crease. There are a few possible causes, and they need different treatments:

CauseWhat is happeningWhat helps
Low or heavy browsThe brow, especially its outer tail, sits low and pushes skin down over the lidA Botox brow lift, if the drop is mild
Natural eye shapeSome people are born with hooded lids; it is simply their anatomyA subtle Botox lift can open the eye a little; makeup techniques
Excess eyelid skinWith age, upper lid skin stretches and folds (dermatochalasis)Upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)
A drooping eyelid (ptosis)The muscle that lifts the lid itself is weak or stretched, so the lid edge sits lowAssessment by an eye doctor or oculoplastic surgeon; Botox does not fix it

If the edge of your eyelid sits low over your pupil, or your eyelid has drooped recently or on one side only, see a doctor before any cosmetic treatment.

How a Botox brow lift works

The eyebrows sit between muscles that pull them in opposite directions. The forehead muscle lifts the brows. The muscles between the brows and the outer part of the muscle ringing the eye pull them down. A Botox brow lift relaxes some of the “down” muscles, mainly a few tiny injections just under the outer tail of each brow, and often the frown muscles too. With less downward pull, the forehead muscle lifts the brow tail slightly, opening up the outer eye.

A study measuring brows two weeks after Botox was injected below the outer half of the brow found a significant lift at the outer brow and more visible upper eyelid. The change is modest, typically a few millimeters, but around the eyes a few millimeters is noticeable.

Who is a good candidate?

  • Good candidateMild hooding or a slightly low, heavy outer brow; you want a fresher, more open look without surgery.
  • May need more than BotoxModerate to severe excess eyelid skin, hooding that touches your lashes or affects your vision, or a lid edge that sits low.
  • Not suitablePregnancy or breastfeeding, certain neuromuscular conditions, or an eyelid that already droops from ptosis.

What to expect

A brow lift takes only a few minutes, often as part of a frown line or crow’s feet treatment. The dose is small, usually a few units per side, and it is placed precisely under the tail of the brow. You can go straight back to your day; stay upright for four hours and skip hard workouts and rubbing the area for 24 hours (see our Botox aftercare guide).

We see you again at two weeks to check the brows are even and add a unit or two if one side needs balancing.

Risks and side effects

  • Small bumps, redness or a bruise at the injection points, settling within hours to days
  • Uneven brows, or a brow tail that lifts too high (the “Spock brow“), which can usually be corrected with a few units
  • Brow heaviness or a lower brow, mainly if the forehead is over-treated
  • A drooping upper eyelid, uncommon and temporary, if Botox spreads to the muscle that lifts the lid; call us if this happens, as eye drops can sometimes help while it wears off
  • Headache in the first day or two

Frequently asked questions

Can Botox fix hooded eyes?

It can improve mild hooding by lifting the tail of the brow a few millimeters. It cannot remove excess eyelid skin or fix a drooping eyelid muscle, which need surgery or a doctor's assessment.

How much does a Botox brow lift raise the brows?

Usually a few millimeters at the outer brow. It is subtle, but around the eyes that is enough to look more open and rested.

How many units of Botox for a brow lift?

Only a few units per side, placed under the tail of the brow, often combined with frown line treatment.

Can Botox make hooded eyes worse?

Yes, if the forehead is over-treated. The forehead muscle is the only one that lifts the brows, so relaxing it too much can let the brows drop.

How long does a Botox brow lift last?

About three to four months. It starts working in 3 to 7 days and reaches its full effect at about two weeks.

What is the difference between hooded eyes and ptosis?

Hooded eyes are skin folding over the lid, often from a low brow or excess skin. Ptosis is a drooping eyelid caused by a weak or stretched lifting muscle. Botox does not treat ptosis.

Is a Botox brow lift better than surgery?

It is a subtle, temporary option with no downtime for mild hooding. Surgery gives a bigger, longer-lasting result for excess eyelid skin or a significantly low brow.
