Hydradermabrasion Vs Microdermabrasion

In a hurry? Skim mode fades everything except the highlighted takeaways.

If you only read one thing

Microdermabrasion exfoliates mechanically, polishing away dead skin with crystals or a diamond tip. HydraFacial, a form of hydradermabrasion, uses a gentle acid peel and vortex suction, then infuses hydrating serums. HydraFacial is usually gentler and better for congested or dehydrated skin; microdermabrasion and DiamondGlow suit rough texture and thicker or oily skin. Both have no downtime.

  • Microdermabrasion buffs the skin with crystals or a diamond tip; HydraFacial uses a gentle peel, vortex suction and serums.
  • HydraFacial is usually gentler and adds hydration; it suits congested, dehydrated and sensitive skin.
  • Microdermabrasion and DiamondGlow suit rough texture, dullness and thicker or oily skin.
  • DiamondGlow combines diamond-tip exfoliation, extraction and serum infusion in one step.
  • Neither treats deep acne scars or deep wrinkles; results are temporary, so monthly treatments are typical.
  • Avoid both with sunburn or active skin infection; wear sunscreen for a week afterwards.

HydraFacial and microdermabrasion are both “no downtime” facials that exfoliate the top layer of skin to leave it smoother and brighter. The difference is how they exfoliate. Microdermabrasion polishes the skin mechanically, with fine crystals or a diamond-tipped wand. HydraFacial, a form of hydradermabrasion, uses a gentle acid peel and water-based suction, then floods the skin with hydrating serums.

A newer option, DiamondGlow, sits in between: diamond-tip microdermabrasion, extraction and serum infusion in one step. This guide compares all three so you can pick the one that suits your skin.

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion uses a handheld device that sprays fine crystals (usually aluminum oxide) or uses a diamond-tipped tip to buff away the outermost layer of dead skin cells, while gentle suction lifts away the debris. It is used for dullness, rough texture, enlarged pores, mild sun damage, fine lines and shallow acne marks.

A course is often a series of treatments a week or more apart, and the skin is usually pink for a few hours afterwards. It can leave skin more sensitive to the sun for a few days, so sunscreen matters.

What is a HydraFacial (hydradermabrasion)?

HydraFacial is the best-known brand of hydradermabrasion. Instead of crystals, a patented Vortex-Fusion handpiece works in steps: it cleanses and applies a gentle acid peel to loosen dead skin, extracts pores with vortex suction, and then infuses hydrating serums such as hyaluronic acid and antioxidants. Boosters and LED light can be added.

Because there is no scrubbing, many people find it gentler than microdermabrasion, and the extra hydration gives an immediate glow. Research on HydraFacial is still limited and mostly in small studies, but they suggest improvements in skin texture, clarity and mild acne.

What about DiamondGlow?

DiamondGlow is a modern take on diamond-tip microdermabrasion. A diamond-tipped wand exfoliates and extracts with suction while a SkinMedica Pro-Infusion serum is pushed into the skin at the same time, chosen for your concern, such as brightening, hydration or clarity. You get the polishing of microdermabrasion with the serum infusion of a HydraFacial.

Which facial is right for you?

  • Dry, dehydrated or tight skinHydraFacial, for the hydration infusion.
  • Blackheads and congested poresHydraFacial, with vortex extraction; DiamondGlow also extracts well.
  • Rough, uneven texture or thicker skinDiamondGlow or microdermabrasion, for mechanical polishing.
  • Sensitive skin or mild rednessHydraFacial is usually gentler. With rosacea, ask us first.
  • Dullness before an eventEither; both give an immediate glow with no downtime.
  • Active, inflamed acneAsk us first. A medical acne plan, such as Forever Clear BBL or a peel, may help more.
  • Deep acne scars or deep wrinklesNeither will reach them; see resurfacing options such as MOXI or Morpheus8.

How often should you get them?

For maintenance, once a month suits most people for either treatment, in step with your skin’s natural renewal cycle. For HydraFacial we recommend no sooner than every 28 days. Microdermabrasion is sometimes done as a closer-spaced series at the start, then monthly. Results from both are temporary, so regular treatments keep the effect going.

Side effects and who should wait

Both treatments are low risk. Expect brief redness, tightness or sensitivity, and with microdermabrasion occasionally slight tenderness or tiny pinpoint bruises. Reschedule if you have a sunburn, a cold sore or another skin infection on your face, and tell us if you use isotretinoin or prescription retinoids, are pregnant, or have reacted to skincare ingredients before. Wear sunscreen for at least a week afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between HydraFacial and microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion exfoliates mechanically with crystals or a diamond tip. HydraFacial uses a gentle acid peel and vortex suction to exfoliate and extract, then infuses hydrating serums, so it is usually gentler and more hydrating.

What is hydradermabrasion?

A facial that combines exfoliation, extraction and serum infusion using water-based vortex suction instead of crystals. HydraFacial is the best-known hydradermabrasion system.

Is HydraFacial better than microdermabrasion?

It depends on your skin. HydraFacial is often better for congested pores, dehydration and sensitive skin. Microdermabrasion or DiamondGlow can suit rough texture and thicker or oily skin better.

What is the difference between DiamondGlow and HydraFacial?

DiamondGlow uses a diamond-tip wand for mechanical exfoliation and infuses a SkinMedica serum at the same time. HydraFacial uses a gentle acid peel and vortex suction. Both extract pores and have no downtime.

How often should you get a HydraFacial or microdermabrasion?

Monthly suits most people for maintenance. We recommend HydraFacial no sooner than every 28 days.

Does microdermabrasion help acne scars?

It can soften shallow marks and uneven tone, but it does not reach deep or pitted acne scars. Resurfacing treatments such as MOXI or Morpheus8 work better for those.

Are there side effects?

Usually only brief redness, tightness or sensitivity. Microdermabrasion can occasionally cause tenderness or tiny pinpoint bruises. Wear sunscreen for at least a week afterwards.
