If you only read one thing

Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable made of poly-L-lactic acid that stimulates your skin to make new collagen, gradually restoring volume and firmness rather than filling with gel. It treats volume loss, smile lines and other facial wrinkles, and was approved for cheek wrinkles in 2023. Most people need 2 to 3 sessions a few weeks apart, results build over months and can last up to two years, and it cannot be dissolved. At Glow Theory Sculptra is $990 per vial.

Sculptra is an injectable that works differently from most fillers. Instead of filling a wrinkle or hollow with gel, it stimulates your skin to make its own new collagen over the weeks after treatment. Results build slowly and look natural, with skin gradually becoming firmer, smoother and fuller, and they can last up to two years.

This guide explains what Sculptra is, what it treats, how it compares with hyaluronic acid filler, what treatment is like, how many vials and sessions you may need, side effects and cost.

What is Sculptra made of?

Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible material that has been used for decades in dissolvable stitches. It comes as a powder that is mixed with sterile water (and now lidocaine) before injection. After treatment, the water is absorbed within days, and the tiny PLLA particles prompt the skin to build collagen around them over the following months. The particles themselves are gradually broken down by the body, leaving your own collagen behind.

What Sculptra treats

  • Volume loss in the cheeks, temples and around the jaw, which makes the face look hollow or tired.
  • Smile lines and other facial wrinkles, its FDA-approved aesthetic use since 2009.
  • Fine lines and crepey skin on the cheeks, FDA-approved in 2023.
  • Overall skin quality and firmness across the face, for a refreshed rather than “done” look.

Sculptra was first approved in 2004 to restore facial fat loss in people with HIV. It is not used in the lips or in the delicate under-eye area.

What the research shows

In the clinical study behind the 2023 FDA approval for cheek wrinkles, people received up to four sessions about four weeks apart. At 12 months, 70.7% had a meaningful improvement in their cheek wrinkles compared with 25.9% of the untreated group, and 76.9% still met that standard at 24 months. Galderma, the manufacturer, reports that improvements in smoothness and firmness last up to two years.

What a Sculptra treatment is like

  1. Consultation: your injector assesses where you have lost volume and estimates how many vials you need. A common starting point is about one vial for each decade of age.
  2. Treatment: after cleansing and numbing, Sculptra is placed deep with a fine needle or blunt cannula. A session takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
  3. Right after: you may look fuller from the water in the mix, but this goes down within a few days.
  4. Massage: your injector will give you massage instructions for the days after treatment, which help spread the product evenly and lower the risk of bumps.
  5. Next sessions: usually 2 to 3 in total, a few weeks apart, then 1 to 2 vials a year to maintain.

Side effects and safety

  • Common and short-lived: tenderness, bruising, swelling and pain at the injection sites. In the 2023 study, about three quarters of these resolved within two weeks.
  • Bumps (papules or nodules): small lumps under the skin, sometimes appearing months later. They are uncommon with good technique and correct mixing and massage, and most can be treated.
  • Not reversible: unlike hyaluronic acid, Sculptra cannot be dissolved, which is why it is placed deep and built up gradually.
  • Rare risks: infection, allergic reaction and, as with any injectable, a blocked blood vessel.

Sculptra is not for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection in the area, or tend to form keloids or raised scars. Tell your injector about any autoimmune condition and medicines.
