Stretch Marks: What Actually Helps Them Fade
What causes stretch marks, early vs mature marks, what really helps (tretinoin, hyaluronic acid, Morpheus8, lasers), what does not (cocoa butter, oils), pregnancy, and stretch mark treatment in Carlsbad.

If you only read one thing
Stretch marks are scars that form when skin stretches or shrinks quickly. They cannot be removed completely, but they can fade. Early red or purple marks respond best: nightly tretinoin for 24 weeks and hyaluronic acid made them less noticeable in studies. Older, pale marks improve with collagen-building treatments such as Morpheus8 RF microneedling and fractional lasers. Cocoa butter, almond oil, olive oil and vitamin E did not help in studies.

Stretch marks are a type of scar that forms when skin stretches or shrinks quickly, damaging the collagen and elastin underneath. They are extremely common after pregnancy, growth spurts, weight changes and muscle building. No treatment removes them completely, but they can fade a lot: creams such as tretinoin and hyaluronic acid help early red or purple marks, and in-office treatments such as RF microneedling and lasers improve the color and texture of older, paler marks. The earlier you start, the better the result.
This guide explains why stretch marks form, what works and what does not, and the treatments that make them less noticeable.
What causes stretch marks?
- Pregnancy: the most common cause, especially in the third trimester.
- Growth spurts during puberty.
- Rapid weight gain or loss.
- Fast muscle growth from weight training, often on the shoulders and arms.
- Hormones and genetics: a family history raises your risk.
- Medical causes: long-term corticosteroid use, Cushing syndrome and some genetic conditions. See a doctor if many wide, dark stretch marks appear without an obvious reason.
Early vs mature stretch marks
Early marks
Striae rubrae
- LookRed, pink, purple or dark brown, depending on skin tone; may be slightly raised and itchy
- ResponseMuch better: creams, light and laser treatments
- Best timeStart as soon as they appear
Mature marks
Striae albae
- LookPale, silvery or lighter than your skin, slightly sunken
- ResponseSlower: collagen-building treatments improve texture
- ExpectSoftening, not removal
What helps stretch marks fade
Creams for early marks
- Tretinoin (a prescription retinoid): applied nightly for 24 weeks, it made early marks less noticeable in a study. Retinol is a weaker over-the-counter option. Not for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Hyaluronic acid: made early marks less noticeable in two large studies.
- Centella asiatica products may help, though evidence is limited.
Massage creams in daily for several weeks. They work best on new marks and do little for old ones.
In-office treatments
| Treatment | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Morpheus8 Body | Mature, sunken marks on the stomach, hips, thighs and arms | A series, 4 to 6 weeks apart; builds collagen to soften texture |
| Fractional laser | Texture of mature marks | A series; some redness for a few days |
| Light and vascular lasers | The redness of early marks | A few sessions; little downtime |
| Chemical peels and microdermabrasion | Mild texture and tone | Modest improvement over a series |
Combining treatments usually works best, and results build over several months as new collagen forms. On darker skin, treatments that heat the skin need careful settings to avoid dark patches.
What does not work
- Cocoa butter, almond oil, olive oil and vitamin E did not prevent or fade stretch marks in studies. They moisturize, which can ease itching, but do not change the scar.
- Tanning makes stretch marks more noticeable, because the marks do not tan. A self-tanner can camouflage them.
- “Stretch mark removal” promises: no treatment erases them completely.
Stretch marks and pregnancy
Whether stretch marks can be prevented in pregnancy is uncertain. Moisturizers with hyaluronic acid or centella may help, and gradual weight gain is gentler on the skin. Check with your doctor before using any stretch mark product while pregnant or breastfeeding, because some ingredients, such as retinoids, are not safe. Most in-office treatments are best started after you finish breastfeeding.
