PDO Thread Lift: What It Can and Cannot Do Without Surgery

A PDO thread lift is often called a “non-surgical facelift”. It uses fine, dissolvable threads placed under the skin to lift sagging tissue and prompt your skin to make new collagen. For the right person, it gives a fresher, lifted look with a few days of downtime and no incisions. It is not a facelift, though: the lift is more modest and temporary, and honest expectations make all the difference to whether you will be happy with it.

What are PDO threads?

PDO stands for polydioxanone, a material that has been used for decades in dissolvable surgical stitches. The threads are placed under the skin through a fine needle or blunt cannula, and they dissolve naturally over about six months. There are two main kinds:

• Lifting threadsHave tiny cones or barbs that grip the tissue so it can be repositioned upward. At Glow Theory we use PDO Max threads for lifting.
• Smooth threadsHave no barbs. They do not lift, but they prompt collagen to improve skin texture and firmness. We use SMUTH PDO threads for this.

Both kinds stimulate new collagen as they dissolve, which is why skin quality can keep improving for a few months after treatment.

What a PDO thread lift can and cannot do

The best candidates are usually in their late 30s to 50s, with early to moderate sagging, reasonably good skin quality and realistic goals. People with very thin skin or significant sagging tend to get less from threads.

What to expect on the day

We clean the skin and numb the treatment area with a local anesthetic. The threads are placed through a few tiny entry points using a fine needle or cannula, then gently adjusted to lift the tissue. The cannula is removed and the threads stay under the skin. Depending on the area and number of threads, the procedure usually takes 60 to 90 minutes. You will see a lift straight away, although swelling can make it look a little exaggerated for the first few days.

Recovery and aftercare

• Swelling, bruising and tenderness are normal and usually settle within a few days.
• Some tightness or a pulling feeling when you open your mouth wide or smile broadly is common at first.
• Avoid big facial movements, such as wide yawning, and dental work for the first couple of weeks, and do not massage or rub the area.
• Sleep on your back for the first few nights if you can, and skip strenuous exercise and saunas for a few days.
• Smiling is fine. Normal expressions do not harm the result.

How long does a PDO thread lift last?

Most people enjoy their result for about six to nine months, depending on the threads used, the area and how quickly their body breaks down the threads. The fullest result usually shows by about four months, as new collagen forms. Research on thread lifts shows the lifting effect is real but temporary: one study of barbed threads found the benefit was clear at the start, reduced by six months and largely gone by a year. That is why we describe threads as a refresh, and why many people repeat or combine them.

Risks and side effects

PDO threads carry fewer risks than surgery, but they are a medical procedure. Beyond the usual swelling and bruising, less common side effects include:

• Dimpling or puckering of the skin, which usually settles within a few weeks
• Slight asymmetry
• A thread that can be felt or seen under the skin, or that works its way toward the surface
• Infection, which is rare
• Temporary numbness or a feeling of stiffness

Contact us if a thread is uncomfortable, visible, or if you notice increasing redness, heat or pain. Do not try to pull or remove a thread yourself; we can check it and adjust or remove it if needed. Thread lifts are not suitable during pregnancy, with an active skin infection or with certain medical conditions, which we review at your consultation.
