Kybella and CoolSculpting both remove fat under the chin without surgery, and the fat cells they destroy do not come back. Kybella is a series of injections of deoxycholic acid that dissolves fat cells. It suits a small or medium pocket of fat and can sculpt precisely along the jawline. CoolSculpting Elite freezes fat with an applicator and no needles. It suits a fuller, pinchable area under the chin and jaw, and usually takes fewer sessions. Neither tightens loose skin. The right choice depends on how much fat you have, its shape, and how you feel about needles and swelling.
This guide compares the two side by side, explains who suits each, what recovery is like and what each costs at our Carlsbad studio.

Which is right for you?
- A small pocket under the chinKybella is usually the better fit. It can treat a small area precisely where an applicator may not sit well.
- A fuller, pinchable double chinCoolSculpting Elite treats a larger area in one cycle and often needs fewer sessions.
- You dislike needlesCoolSculpting has no injections.
- You cannot take time with a swollen chinCoolSculpting has less visible swelling. With Kybella, plan sessions around events.
- Fat along the jawline as well as the chinCoolSculpting treats the chin and jaw area; Kybella is FDA-approved for under the chin only.
- Loose skin rather than fatNeither is the answer on its own. Skin tightening such as Sofwave or Morpheus8 suits loose skin; see neck tightening without surgery.
How Kybella works
Kybella is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a substance your body makes to break down dietary fat. Injected into the fat under the chin, it destroys fat cell membranes, and your body clears the cells over the following weeks. It was approved by the FDA in 2015 for moderate to severe fullness under the chin in adults. Most people need two to four sessions spaced at least a month apart, and the label allows up to six. Each session uses one or more vials depending on the size of the area.
Swelling is the main trade-off. It is expected after each session and is most noticeable for the first few days; bruising, tenderness, numbness and firmness are also common. Read more in is Kybella permanent?
How CoolSculpting works for the chin
CoolSculpting Elite uses a small applicator that draws the fat under the chin between cooling panels. Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the surrounding skin, so they are damaged while the skin is protected, and your body clears them over the next few months. Each session removes about 20 to 25% of the fat in the treated area. Most people need one or two sessions per area.
Afterwards you may have redness, numbness, tingling or tenderness, and you can go straight back to your day. Rarely, the treated area grows larger weeks or months later (paradoxical adipose hyperplasia), which is treatable. See the CoolSculpting results timeline.
Both need a stable weight. The fat cells left behind can still grow, so significant weight gain can bring back some fullness after either treatment.
