Dark, coarse facial hair in women is usually caused by androgens, often linked to PCOS, menopause, genetics or some medicines. No natural method permanently stops it: shaving, threading, waxing and bleaching are temporary, and weight loss can help when PCOS is the cause. Birth control pills, spironolactone and eflornithine cream slow regrowth over six months or more, and laser hair removal gives the longest-lasting reduction for dark hair, often with occasional touch-ups.

Some facial hair is normal for women, and most women have fine, light hair on the upper lip and chin. When dark, coarse hair grows on the chin, jawline, upper lip or neck, it is usually linked to androgens, the hormones that drive hair growth, and sometimes to a condition such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). At-home methods like shaving, threading and waxing remove hair for a short time; prescription treatments slow regrowth; and laser hair removal gives the longest-lasting reduction for dark hair.
This guide explains why women get facial hair, when to see a doctor, what “natural” options can and cannot do, and how medical treatment and laser help.
Why do women get facial hair?
Everyone makes androgens. When levels rise, or hair follicles are more sensitive to them, fine hair on the face can turn into dark, coarse hair. When this happens in a male-like pattern, doctors call it hirsutism. Common causes include:
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): shifts the balance of sex hormones, often along with irregular periods, acne and weight changes.
- Hormonal life stages: perimenopause and menopause, when estrogen falls and androgens have more effect, especially on the chin.
- Genetics and ancestry: women of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and South Asian descent are more likely to have extra hair with no underlying condition.
- Medicines: such as testosterone products, DHEA, danazol and minoxidil.
- Less common causes: Cushing syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and, rarely, a hormone-producing tumor.
See a doctor if hair growth is heavy or appears quickly over a few months, or comes with a deepening voice, scalp hair loss, new acne, increased muscle mass or irregular periods. These can point to a hormone problem that needs testing, usually with your doctor, gynecologist or an endocrinologist.
At-home hair removal
| Method | How long it lasts | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Shaving or dermaplaning | A day or two | Stubble; it does not make hair grow back thicker or darker |
| Plucking or threading | A few weeks | Ingrown hairs and dark marks; fine for a few stray hairs |
| Waxing | 3 to 6 weeks | Irritation; avoid while using retinoids |
| Hair removal creams | Days to a week | Irritation; patch test first |
| Bleaching | Until hair grows out | Makes hair less visible; can irritate skin |
Can you stop facial hair growth naturally?
There is no natural method that permanently stops facial hair, but some steps can help when hormones are the cause:
- Weight loss, if you are overweight, can lower androgen levels, especially with PCOS.
- Spearmint tea has shown small drops in androgen levels in a few small studies, but the effect on visible hair is uncertain.
- Turmeric pastes, sugar scrubs and other home remedies only remove or lighten hair temporarily and can irritate skin.
Be wary of supplements that claim to “balance hormones.” They are not proven, and some can interact with medicines.
Medical treatments that slow facial hair
- Birth control pillsLower androgen levels. A common first step for women who do not want to become pregnant.
- SpironolactoneAn anti-androgen pill, often added if the pill alone is not enough. It must not be taken in pregnancy.
- Eflornithine creamA prescription cream used twice a day that slows new facial hair growth. It does not remove existing hair, so it is often combined with laser.
Hormone treatments take six months or more to show a clear difference, and hair usually returns if they stop. The same medicines help hormonal acne; see our hormonal acne guide and prescription skin treatments.
Laser hair removal for women’s facial hair
Laser hair removal damages the follicle so hair grows back sparser, finer and slower. It works best on dark hair and gives the longest-lasting result of any method for the upper lip, chin, jawline and sideburns. Because facial hair in women is often hormone-driven, the face usually needs a full course of sessions every 4 to 6 weeks, and occasional touch-ups afterward. Combining laser with medical treatment of the cause gives the best long-term result. Read is laser hair removal permanent? for more.
At Glow Theory we use Fusion Light for lighter skin and Fusion Dark for coarse hair on darker skin tones, both by InMode. The whole face takes about 12 to 15 minutes.

Frequently asked questions
Why do women grow chin hair?
Usually because of androgens, the hormones that drive hair growth, often linked to PCOS, menopause, genetics or certain medicines.
How can I stop facial hair growth naturally?
No natural method stops it permanently. Weight loss can help with PCOS, and spearmint tea has limited evidence; shaving, threading and waxing remove hair temporarily.
Does shaving make facial hair grow back thicker?
No. Shaved hair can feel coarser because it is cut bluntly, but it does not grow back thicker or darker.
Is facial hair a sign of PCOS?
It can be, especially with irregular periods, acne or weight changes. See your doctor for testing.
Is laser hair removal good for women's facial hair?
Yes, for dark hair. It gives the longest-lasting reduction, though hormone-driven facial hair often needs touch-ups.
What is the best treatment for gray or blonde facial hair?
Electrolysis, because lasers need dark pigment in the hair to work.
