If you only read one thing
Laser hair removal gives permanent hair reduction, not guaranteed permanent removal. The FDA defines permanent reduction as a long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs that regrow. After a full course of 6 to 8 sessions most people have far fewer, finer hairs and stay smooth for months or years, but some hair can return, especially with hormonal changes, so occasional touch-ups are common.
- Lasers are FDA-cleared for permanent hair reduction, not total removal.
- Most people need 6 to 8 sessions because lasers only treat actively growing hairs.
- The first session removes about 10 to 25% of hairs (AAD).
- Sessions are every 4 to 6 weeks for the face and 6 to 8 weeks for the body.
- Hormones such as PCOS, pregnancy and menopause can trigger regrowth.
- White, gray, blonde and red hair respond poorly; electrolysis can treat them.
- Occasional touch-ups keep results.

Laser hair removal gives permanent hair reduction, not guaranteed permanent hair removal. After a full course of treatment, most people have far fewer hairs, and the ones that grow back are usually finer, lighter and slower growing. Many stay smooth for months or years, but some hairs can return over time, especially with hormonal changes, so occasional touch-up sessions are common. Most people need 6 to 8 sessions for the best result.
This guide explains what “permanent” really means for laser hair removal, why you need several sessions, what can make hair come back, and how to get the longest-lasting result.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
The FDA clears hair removal lasers for “permanent hair reduction,” which it defines as a long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs that regrow after a treatment course. That definition does not promise that every hair is gone. In practice:
- Follicles that are destroyed do not grow hair again.
- Follicles that are only damaged may grow back finer, lighter hair, or start growing again after months or years.
- New follicles can be activated later by hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, menopause or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, most patients stay hair-free for months or years, and some need maintenance treatments to keep the area clear.
Why you need several sessions
Hair grows in cycles. At any time, only some hairs are in the active growing phase (anagen), and the laser can only damage follicles in that phase, because the hair needs to be attached to the follicle to carry the heat down to it. Each session treats the hairs that are growing then, so a series spaced a few weeks apart catches the rest as they enter the growing phase.
A typical course
- Early
- Clear change
- Maintenance
Treated hairs shed over the next few weeks after each session. Do not pluck or wax between sessions, because that removes the hair the laser needs to target; shaving is fine.
How many sessions you need
| Area | Session spacing | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Face (upper lip, chin, sideburns) | Every 4 to 6 weeks | Often needs more sessions and touch-ups, as facial hair is hormone-sensitive |
| Underarms and bikini | Every 6 to 8 weeks | Coarse, dark hair usually responds well |
| Legs, arms, back, chest | Every 6 to 8 weeks | Large areas; slower hair cycles |
Most people need 6 to 8 sessions in total. The exact number depends on your hair color and thickness, skin tone, the area and your hormones.
What affects how permanent your results are
- Hair colorDark hair absorbs the most laser energy. White, gray, light blonde and red hair has little pigment and responds poorly; see laser hair removal for blonde hair.
- Skin toneDarker skin needs a laser and settings designed for it, which is why we use Fusion Dark for coarse hair on darker skin and Fusion Light for lighter skin.
- HormonesPCOS, pregnancy, menopause and some medicines can trigger new growth, especially on the chin and neck. Treating the cause helps; see facial hair in women.
- Completing the courseStopping after two or three sessions leaves many follicles untreated, so hair returns sooner.
- Fine, light hairVery fine hair responds less well and can remain after a full course.
Laser vs electrolysis
Laser hair removal
Large areas, dark hair
- HowLight treats many follicles at once
- SpeedMinutes per area
- ResultPermanent reduction, occasional touch-ups
- Hair colorBest on dark hair
Electrolysis
Small areas, any hair color
- HowA fine probe treats one follicle at a time
- SpeedSlow; many visits for larger areas
- ResultDestroys each treated follicle
- Hair colorWorks on white, gray, blonde and red hair
Many people use laser for most of the hair and electrolysis for a few remaining light hairs.
Side effects
Redness, swelling and mild discomfort for 1 to 3 days are common. Blistering, crusting and lasting skin color changes are rare when an experienced provider uses the right laser for your skin. Avoid sun and tanning before and after sessions.
Cost and booking

Frequently asked questions
Is laser hair removal permanent?
It gives permanent hair reduction: far fewer hairs long term, but not a guarantee that every hair is gone. Some people need occasional touch-ups.
How many laser hair removal sessions do I need?
Most people need 6 to 8 sessions, every 4 to 6 weeks for the face and every 6 to 8 weeks for the body.
Why does hair grow back after laser hair removal?
Some follicles are only damaged rather than destroyed, and hormonal changes can activate new follicles over time.
Is underarm laser hair removal permanent?
Underarm hair is usually coarse and dark, so it responds well, and many people need few or no touch-ups after a full course.
Can I shave between laser sessions?
Yes. Shave, but do not pluck or wax, because the laser needs the hair root in place.
Is electrolysis more permanent than laser?
Electrolysis destroys each follicle it treats and works on any hair color, but it is slow; laser is faster for larger areas.
