How we write and check our articles

If you only read one thing
After HALO, expect sunburn-like redness and heat on the first day, swelling for a day or two, then tiny dark dots and a bronzed, sandpaper texture around days 2 to 3. The face usually peels and finishes healing by about day 7, with a pink glow that fades over the next week. Moisturize often, avoid picking, wear SPF 30 daily and stay out of direct sun for about two months.
- Day 0: redness and heat like a sunburn; ice and moisturize.
- Days 1 to 2: swelling, often around the eyes; cleanse gently from 24 hours.
- Days 2 to 3: tiny dark dots (MENDs) and bronzing; redness peaks around day 3.
- Days 4 to 7: the face peels and heals; neck and chest can take up to two weeks.
- Makeup is usually fine once peeling has finished; avoid direct sun for about two months.
- Call your provider for worsening swelling, pus, fever or blisters.

Knowing what each day after HALO looks like makes recovery far easier. Most people are surprised by how normal the first day feels, then by how rough and bronzed their skin looks on day three. Both are part of healing. This guide walks you through a typical HALO recovery day by day, the aftercare that helps, what is normal and what is not, and when you can wear makeup, work out and go back in the sun.
Your own recovery depends on how strong your treatment was and the area treated, and we will give you personal instructions on the day. If anything here differs from your aftercare sheet, follow your sheet.
HALO recovery day by day
| When | What you will notice | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Day of treatment | Redness and heat like a sunburn for 12 to 24 hours; possible pinpoint bleeding; tightness | Cold compresses; apply the moisturizer we give you; sleep with your head raised |
| Day 1 to 2 | Swelling, often most noticeable around the eyes on the first morning | Keep icing in short spells; start gentle cleansing after 24 hours |
| Day 2 to 3 | Tiny dark dots and a bronzed, sandpaper texture appear; redness is usually strongest around day 3 | Moisturize often; do not scrub or pick |
| Day 4 to 7 | Dry, rough skin flakes and peels; the face usually finishes by about day 7 | Let it shed on its own; keep moisturizing |
| Week 2 | Fresh, smoother skin with a rosy glow that fades; the neck, chest or hands may still be peeling | Makeup is usually fine once peeling is done |
| Weeks 3 to 12 | Skin looks brighter and more even; texture and fine lines keep improving as collagen builds | Daily sunscreen; restart actives when we advise |
What are the tiny dark dots?
A day or two after HALO, many people notice a fine grid of tiny brown dots and a bronzed tone. These are microscopic treatment zones carrying damaged skin and pigment up to the surface, sometimes called MENDs. They are a good sign: they are how sun spots and uneven pigment leave your skin. They make the skin feel like fine sandpaper, then flake off by themselves over the next few days. Do not scrub, pick or exfoliate them away, as this can cause irritation or marks.

- MoisturizeGenerously and often; a petroleum-based ointment helps very dry or tight skin
- SleepWith your head raised the first night to limit swelling

Avoid
Until healed
- PickingScratching, scrubbing or peeling flakes
- ActivesRetinoids, acids, scrubs and brushes until we say so
- HeatHard workouts, saunas and hot tubs until the skin has healed
- MakeupUntil peeling has finished

If you get cold sores, we may prescribe an antiviral to take before and after treatment; keep taking it as directed. For discomfort, acetaminophen (Tylenol) is usually enough. Itching while the skin peels is normal; resist scratching.

What is normal, and when to call us
Normal: redness for up to a week, swelling for a couple of days, bronzing, dryness, peeling, itching, a few small breakouts or tiny white bumps in the weeks after, and a pink glow that fades. Temporary darker patches can appear, more often in medium to darker skin, and usually fade with sun protection and time.
Call us straight away if you notice
Swelling that keeps getting worse, pus or yellow crusting, increasing warmth or pain, a fever of 101.5°F or higher, blisters, or severe itching. These can be signs of infection or a reaction and are best treated early.
When will I see the final result?
Your skin will look brighter and more even as soon as the peeling finishes. Texture, pores and fine lines keep improving for about three months as new collagen forms. Some people have a second session 4 to 6 weeks later for a stronger result. Read is HALO laser worth it? for results, who it suits and how it compares with other lasers.
