Skin Care After Chemical Peel

In a hurry? Skim mode fades everything except the highlighted takeaways.

If you only read one thing

After a chemical peel, cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, moisturize with a fragrance-free cream whenever skin feels tight, stay out of the sun until healed and then wear SPF 30+ daily, and never pick peeling skin. Avoid retinoids, acids, scrubs, heat and heavy sweating until peeling stops. Light peels heal in about 1 to 7 days; medium peels take 7 to 14 days.

  • Light peels: redness 1 to 7 days, light flaking, makeup the same or next day.
  • Medium peels: swelling for 48 hours, then crusting and peeling over 7 to 14 days.
  • Cleanse gently, moisturize often with a fragrance-free cream and let flakes fall on their own.
  • Avoid retinoids, acids, scrubs, saunas and hard workouts until peeling stops.
  • Stay out of direct sun until healed, then use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily.
  • Call your provider for increasing pain, pus, fever, blisters or cold sores.

A chemical peel removes damaged surface skin so smoother, more even skin can grow back. What you do in the days after it matters almost as much as the peel itself: gentle care helps your skin heal quickly, while picking, scrubbing or sun exposure can cause irritation, infection or dark patches. How long recovery takes depends mostly on how deep the peel was.

This guide covers what to expect day by day, a simple aftercare routine, when you can go back to makeup, exercise and your usual skincare, and the signs that mean you should call us. Always follow the specific instructions your provider gives you for your peel.

What to expect after a chemical peel

  • Light (superficial) peels such as glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid peels: your skin may look pink and feel tight, like mild sunburn, for 1 to 7 days, with fine flaking for a few days. Many people can wear makeup the same or next day. Some light peels cause little visible peeling at all, and that does not mean the peel did not work.
  • Medium peels such as TCA-based peels: expect redness and swelling that gets worse for about 48 hours, then darkening, crusting and peeling over 7 to 14 days. Plan to stay home for most of the first week; camouflage makeup is usually fine after 5 to 7 days.
  • Deep peels are a medical procedure with 2 to 3 weeks of healing and months of strict sun avoidance. They are done in a surgical setting and are not among the peels we offer.

Your new skin will look brighter and smoother once peeling finishes, and results keep improving over the following weeks. Pigment and texture usually need a series of peels.

Sun protection after a peel

Freshly peeled skin burns easily and is prone to dark patches, especially on medium to deeper skin tones and after peels for melasma. Stay out of direct sun until your skin has healed, then use a broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher sunscreen every day and reapply every two hours outdoors. Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) are usually gentler on new skin, and a tinted one with iron oxides adds protection against visible light. A wide-brimmed hat helps too. Our guide to sunscreen ingredients explains the options.

Possible side effects

  • Redness: normal for days; after medium peels it can linger for weeks, and occasionally months.
  • Darkening or light patches: temporary darkening is more common in medium to dark skin and usually fades with sun protection and treatment. Permanent changes are rare.
  • Cold sores: a peel can trigger a cold sore outbreak. If you get cold sores, tell us before your peel; an antiviral medicine can prevent one.
  • Infection and scarring: rare, and much less likely if you do not pick.

Call us if you notice increasing pain, swelling or warmth after the first two days, pus, yellow crusts or a fever, blisters after a light peel, cold sore blisters, or dark patches that appear as you heal. Early treatment prevents most problems from becoming lasting ones.

Frequently asked questions

What should I put on my face after a chemical peel?

A mild, fragrance-free cleanser, a bland, fragrance-free moisturizer or ointment, and, once healed, a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen. Skip actives until peeling stops.

How long does peeling last after a chemical peel?

About 3 to 7 days after a light peel and 7 to 14 days after a medium peel. Some light peels cause little visible peeling.

Can I wear makeup after a chemical peel?

Usually the same or next day after a light peel, and after 5 to 7 days after a medium peel, once crusting has gone.

When can I use retinol after a chemical peel?

Once flaking has stopped, about a week after a light peel, and once fully healed after a medium peel, or as your provider advises.

Why does my skin look worse after a chemical peel?

Redness, tightness, darkening and flaking are a normal part of healing for the first days. Call us if pain, swelling or redness increases after day two, or you see pus or blisters.

Can I exercise after a chemical peel?

After a light peel, wait 24 to 48 hours. After a medium peel, wait until peeling has finished, since sweat and heat irritate healing skin.
