Juvéderm Voluma XC is a firm hyaluronic acid filler designed to restore volume deep under the skin. In 2013 it became the first filler approved by the FDA to correct age-related volume loss in the cheeks, and it is now also approved for the chin and the temples. It is one of the longest-lasting hyaluronic acid fillers, with cheek results lasting up to two years.
Here is what Voluma treats, how it compares with other fillers, what treatment is like, how long it lasts, side effects and what it costs at Glow Theory.
What Voluma treats
| Area | FDA approval | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|
| Cheeks and midface | Age-related volume loss, adults 21+ (2013) | Up to 2 years |
| Chin | Improving chin profile, adults over 21 (2020) | Studied to 1 year |
| Temples | Moderate to severe temple hollowing (2024) | Up to 13 months |
Injectors also use Voluma along the jawline and in other deep areas. Voluma is not a good choice for the delicate under-eye area or the lips, where softer fillers such as Juvéderm Volbella or Restylane Eyelight are used.
How Voluma works
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule found naturally in skin, where it binds water. Voluma’s gel is made with Allergan’s Vycross technology, which cross-links short and long hyaluronic acid chains into a firm, cohesive gel. Placed deep, close to the bone, it lifts and supports the tissue above it, much like the fat pads and bone that thin with age. It contains lidocaine to make injections more comfortable. Because it is hyaluronic acid, it can be dissolved with an enzyme if needed.
Voluma compared with other fillers
Juvéderm Voluma
Firm, long-lasting lift
- Best forCheeks, chin, temples
- FeelFirm structural support
- LastsUp to 2 years in the cheeks
Restylane Lyft
Firm lift, slightly different gel
- Best forCheeks and midface, hands
- FeelFirm, more projection
- LastsAbout 12 months in the cheeks
Both are good cheek fillers; your injector chooses based on your anatomy, the look you want and how each gel behaves in that area. If you want gradual, overall volume rather than targeted lift, Sculptra is an alternative. Our guide to facial volume loss explains the options.
What a Voluma treatment is like
- Consultation: your injector looks at your face from several angles, discusses your goals and confirms how many syringes you need.
- Numbing: a numbing cream may be applied, and the lidocaine in the gel numbs as it goes in.
- Injection: filler is placed deep with a fine needle or a blunt cannula. Treatment usually takes 30 minutes or less.
- Results: you see the lift straight away; it settles as swelling goes down over 1 to 2 weeks.
- Review: a follow-up lets your injector check symmetry and add a little if needed.
Side effects and safety
Most side effects are mild and settle within 2 to 4 weeks: swelling, tenderness, firmness, lumps, bruising, redness and itching at the injection sites. Avoid strenuous exercise, heat and pressure on the area for a day or so, and ask us before booking dental work or a vaccine close to your treatment.
Call us straight away if you notice skin turning white, blue or mottled, severe or increasing pain, or any change in vision after filler. These can be signs of filler blocking a blood vessel, which is rare but needs urgent treatment with a dissolving enzyme.
Voluma is not for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have severe allergies or a history of anaphylaxis, are allergic to lidocaine or the bacterial proteins used to make hyaluronic acid, or have an infection or active skin condition in the area. Tell us about blood thinners and cold sores before treatment.
